Judge Pittman is the first African-American, in Muskegon County history, selected by the Michigan Supreme Court to provide leadership in the Muskegon County court system. Chief Judge Pittman’s term as Chief Judge of both the Muskegon County Circuit and Probate Courts began January 1, 2022.

Success Team Assisting Youth (STAY) Project

Tasked by Governor Snyder with developing systemic solutions to stemming the “School to Prison Pipeline” in the County of Muskegon. Local school districts have since adopted its principles in the effort to keep students connected to their educational program and present in school.

Michigan Supreme Court’s Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Workgroup

Makes Michigan’s One Court of Justice mission accessible and accountable to all Michigan citizens. The work of this group has resulted in the issuance of the Supreme Court’s recent Administrative Orders, which serve as the guidelines for all Michigan courts to follow, going forward.

What’s new with Judge Gregory C. Pittman?

In February of 2022, Chief Judge accepted the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ invitation to serve as Co-Chairman of the State of Michigan Child Welfare Improvement Task Force, which serves to address the issues of over-representation of children of color in the foster care system in Michigan, the working definitions of child abuse and child neglect, and the expansion of kinship care for children.

Special thanks to the Hon. Gregory C. Pittman (For Judge. Pittman) for his inspiring remarks and administration of our 1L professionalism oath Friday as we concluded 1L Orientation. Judge Pittman has led a remarkable career since earning his JD from our law school in 1987, including two years with the Michigan Department of Commerce, as a staff attorney with the Kent County Public Defender’s Office, and in private practice with the Muskegon law firm of Williams, Hughes, Corwin & Sinninger. Judge Pittman also served as Magistrate of the 60th District Court, and is an adjunct faculty member at Muskegon Community College, Baker College, and the Michigan Judicial Institute. On January 6, 1998, Governor John Engler appointed Judge Pittman to the Muskegon County Probate Bench. His appointment, also, filled the final slot in the 14th Circuit Court Family Division. Judge Pittman has been re-elected, continuously, since 1998.
